AMPLYF's Interview with Saina Nehwal
In this exclusive interview, Saina talks about the mind behind the athlete, her rituals, and the challenges she’s overcome to become the champion she is today.
1. Badminton is often seen as a physically demanding sport, but how do you think it shapes a player's personality and mental resilience beyond the court?
Saina: Badminton builds character in more ways than one. The challenges you face on court—losing, bouncing back, training through pain—translate into strong mental grit. It teaches you patience, discipline, and how to stay grounded even in success.
2. What’s one superstition or ritual you follow before stepping onto the court?
Saina: I just pray a little before entering the court—it gives me inner peace and helps me focus.
3. You’ve played in different arenas across the world. Is there a particular venue that holds a special place in your heart, and why?
Saina: The Siri Fort Indoor Stadium in Delhi will always be special. I became world number 1 there and saw the home crowd erupt with energy. It reminded me of how much love and support Indian players have today.
4. When was your toughest time as a player and what helped you overcome it?
Saina: Injuries were definitely my biggest hurdles. The knee injury in 2016, especially, tested me in every way. What got me through was my family’s support, my team, and the sheer will to fight back because badminton is my soul.
5. If you weren’t a badminton player, what unexpected career path might you have chosen?
Saina: I actually wanted to be a doctor. The idea of helping people always appealed to me.
6. Other than badminton, which sport do you like to watch—on TV and in a stadium? And why?
Saina: I love watching tennis—it’s fast-paced, strategic, and incredibly gripping to watch both on TV and live.
7. Social media has brought athletes closer to their fans, but it also comes with challenges. How do you balance staying connected with fans while maintaining privacy and focus on your game?
Saina: I appreciate the connection with fans—it’s their love that keeps me going. But I also make sure to log off when needed. It’s about drawing healthy boundaries and remembering that your game and your peace come first.
8. How do you think the sports culture, especially for girls, is developing in India since you started playing and now?
Saina: It’s grown tremendously. Today, parents are encouraging daughters to pursue sports as a career, which is a big shift from when I began. I want to inspire many girls by motivating them.
